Governor Paul LePage has proposed a new budget for MaineCare (which is government subsidized healthcare, similar to Medicare), which would eliminate all funding for patients who receive methadone treatment. The treatment costs on average $100/week, which is cost prohibitive to most who qualify for MaineCare's benefits. Amy Alexander is one of CAP's patients, has been on a methadone treatment for eight years, finding it to be the only treatment to not cause a relapse back into addiction. If her methadone treatment is taken away, Alexander worries about how she'll cope with its sudden absence, without tapering its treatment.
